Rome, on our way to ArgentinaOn our way to Argentina we stayed for 2 nights/3 days in Rome, a splendid city which exceeds our expectations and the many "yes-but's". What we had heard in advance was the following: Rome, is a splendid city, with a lot of superb buildings and history an must see's and delicious food/drink, but......... - is very expensive Well, fortunately nothing of all this was true, in our opinion. Nothing then positive concerning Rome. We could not spot any of these bad things. Sunday 18 September
2005 we arrived around the afternoon hour at Fiumicino
airport (Leonardo da Vinci airport, around 35 km from
Rome) and already quite fast we were in our Bed & Breakfast
(Katja's, Roman Holiday). It was situated in a superb old
building on short walking distance of Sint
Pieter's square (near the Vatican). It was a nice apartment with 2
rooms
for guests, managed by a very pleasant and helpful
Italian/Finish couple. They served a lovely breakfast.
The next day
we take the underground (metro) to the Colosseum. People
and the guide book advised us to take a guide which will tell us
more
concerning Rome (bring it a life), the Colosseum and the Palatijn. Later
this appears not to be necessary. There are so many guides
with microphones walking around that where you stand also
you will hear explanation. Otherwise we could have
explored it easily at our own pace and along our own way
seeing
the highlights. You see many guides and groups who speak
several languages. Tuesday the day of departure we visit the Vatican museum, where we of course visit the beautiful and stunning Sistine Chapel. The Vatican museum is absolutely incredible beautiful and rich. On the mostly splendid paintings most of brutal slaughters are not only represented, it is especially total incomprehensible that the Roman Catholic church itself this way outrageous has been possible enrich by means of robber stable, robbery and offerings of millions poor followers. In our opinion a complete big discrace for the institute church (not to confuse with the message of the Christian religion, beautiful by nature). After the Vatican museum we pay a visit to the Sint Pieter Cathedral, where we accidentally end up in the queu for the tomb stone of pope Johannes Paulus II, still people burst into tears for the loss of the previous pope of the Roman catholic church. We try to fast avoid this crowd and pay a visit to the splendid cathedral itself and end our visit in Rome by climbing (not necessary to take the elevator) St. Pieter's dome still just as the cupola and enjoy the superb view over the capital of Italy. Rome, we will return. Argentina, here we come!
