The Langtang National Park lies north of Katmandu and is besides the Annapura and Mount Everest region the third mayor trekking region in Nepal. The Valley is known as an save heaven for Tibetan people for several centuries.
The described trekking is based on a do it yourself experience. Although in some cases it might be handy to take a guide, it is not necessary and trekking alone gives you more freedom. For safety reasons it's better to go trekking with at least two persons. If you don't do crazy things like walking to many hours at one day, or walking in bad conditions like for example high snow, and very close fogs you can do this trekking easily on your own.
For the Langtang National Park you need a trekking permit. You can buy a permit at the entry of the Langtang National Park in Dunche, or buy it in advance in your hotel or at a trekking agency. A trekking permit costs 1000 rs . If you want to climb peaks above 6000 meters you need a special peak permit to go for the top. (For the popular trekking peaks like Tsergo Ri (4984) or Yala Peak (5500) you don't need a extra permit.)
If you don't go for the high peaks like Yala, the Gangja La Pass, or the true end of the valley (Upper Langtang). You don't need a tent and sleeping bag. A small sleeping sag is enough, saving you a few kilo's.
Take a Bus from the new bus station at Ringroad. The Bus Leaves at
6:30 or 7:30. And cost about 200 rs.
The Bus ride will take you, instead of many travel books say, around 11 hours.
If you travel in the monsoon season, expect the bus trip to be longer, as you
probably have to walk for about 1 or 2 km to pass a huge landslide to take
another bus that is waiting for you at the other side of the landslide.
You can get your bus ticket at the bus station at Ringroad. Get your ticket one day in advance or else you probable have a seat in the front or the back or maybe even no seat at all. Even if you have a good seat. (Try to get a seat number between number 6 and 20). There is a possibility that the bus is so overcrowded, that people hang over you.
Until Trisuli where there will be a lunch stop for about half an hour and until so far the road is pretty good, after Trisuli the road is formed by sand, stones and rocks. Sometimes the bus makes a stop to repair a broken gear or something something like that.
Most of the people get out in Dunche, where they start their trekking into the Langtang Valley or go to the holy lakes of Gosainkund and walk back to Kathmandu (Helambu Trekking).
To Syapru Besi the bus ride will take another 2,5 hours along steep ridges. Sometimes the bus hangs a little bit over to one side in the corners. Luckily it's dark and you don't see the depths beneath you but on the way back you will !
As an alternative you can also hire a Jeep, which is much, much more comfortable. A jeep will cost around 50 dollars. If you can share a Jeep with 4 people you might want to go with a jeep. Sharing a jeep on the way back home is easily arranged if there are more Tourist in Syapru Desi.
